戦争で船は超ポップアート塗装を施されていた
第一次世界大戦中の船はこんな、目立つ塗装が施されていたそうです
何故？戦争中なのに、わざわざ発見され、しかも目標になっちゃうような、わざわざ目立つ塗装だったのか？
調べてみたところ、WikiPediaのよれば、Dazzle camouflageという塗装方法なんだそうです。
Dazzle camouflage, also known as Razzle Dazzle or Dazzle painting, was a camouflage paint scheme used on ships, extensively during World War I and to a lesser extent in World War II. Credited to artist Norman Wilkinson, it consisted of a complex pattern of geometric shapes in contrasting colours, interrupting and intersecting each other.
これは第一次世界大戦中、アーティストであり、英国海軍に従事されていた Norman Wilkinson氏が考案した一種の迷彩塗装なんだそうです。
これは、ドイツで開発されたUボートから発射される魚雷の対策で、レーダーやソナーなど無い時代は、Uボートはまず潜望鏡で攻撃目標となる敵の船を見つけると、目測によって目標の船の距離を測定し、次にその船の速度を計測し、魚雷の速度を考え、現在の方向からどれくらいズレた方向に発射すれば良いかを決定していたそうです。
これらの塗装は、距離や測度、進行方向を錯乱させる効果を狙っていたようです。
Dazzle camouflageがどれくらい効果があったのかは判りませんが、これほど多くの船がこの迷彩で塗装されていることからすれば、音も無く現れ、いきなり魚雷で攻撃するUボートの脅威は計り知れないものがあったということなのでは無いでしょうか？
とにかく戦争という悲しいな状態の中、敵から身を守るのに、アートを利用するというのは発想は素晴らしいですね！
